Texas Trio Hearkens Lost . . . What?
July 14th, 2008A difficult task ensues when attempting to pinpoint what it is about Bagbrown’s debut that sounds so eerily familiar. Likened to most three-piece rock bands of the late sixties, the group transcends a bold electric blues mentality into their diverse, yet comprehensive approach to songwriting. However, to say that it is reminiscent of a traditional pop record is a far cry from the term as defined by modernity. Slowly driven with an emphasis on shifts between deep watery vocals and scathing guitar leads, self-titled picks up pace and intensity as it progresses.
“I think, as most people do, that after fifty years of rock music much of the form has been exhausted. So much music has been made there almost isn’t any practical need to record anymore of it. Be that as it may, a void will always exist that needs to be filled by live performance. People who have come out to the show almost always have an opinion of who we sound like or what we remind them of. I know that’s the norm for any new band, nowadays. It’s just easier to remember the last half-century and identify with the music you’ve grown up with or the bands you are used to hearing than it is to describe something new by its qualitative features alone. I know I do it all the time.” says twenty-three year old front man Scott Heaton.

Substantive LPs are often tall orders for new bands yet this ten song, forty-five minute release has become only an endearing portion of their live repertoire. Accordingly, the outfit intends on returning to the studio this autumn to record a follow up EP (inclusive of a B-Side from self-titled) before booking regional shows. The epic “Pennsylvania Avenue” uses DC as Springsteen used Asbury Park, with the inner emotions, darkness, passions, power, and hope of the many different groups in DC used as a prism to reflect the power, passion, dreams, and often undiscovered darkness of humanity. “The Runner was not an easy new music collection to record and create” states, Miss Kristin, who often times had difficulty getting up off the floor to sing a part and complete the project. “It was all I could do to write the words let alone sing them”. But Kristin prevailed on purpose for what she calls, “the greater cause”. The Runner is a journey in facing ourselves head on. We are all runners in one way or another, and Miss Kristin has written a universal new music collection with the intention others can relate to and find comfort in the fact they are not alone, but a part of something larger and greater then themselves.
