Texas Trio Hearkens Lost . . . What?

July 14th, 2008

A difficult task ensues when attempting to pinpoint what it is about Bagbrown’s debut that sounds so eerily familiar.  Likened to most three-piece rock bands of the late sixties, the group transcends a bold electric blues mentality into their diverse, yet comprehensive approach to songwriting.  However, to say that it is reminiscent of a traditional pop record is a far cry from the term as defined by modernity.  Slowly driven with an emphasis on shifts between deep watery vocals and scathing guitar leads, self-titled picks up pace and intensity as it progresses.

“I think, as most people do, that after fifty years of rock music much of the form has been exhausted.  So much music has been made there almost isn’t any practical need to record anymore of it.  Be that as it may, a void will always exist that needs to be filled by live performance.  People who have come out to the show almost always have an opinion of who we sound like or what we remind them of.  I know that’s the norm for any new band, nowadays.  It’s just easier to remember the last half-century and identify with the music you’ve grown up with or the bands you are used to hearing than it is to describe something new by its qualitative features alone.  I know I do it all the time.” says twenty-three year old front man Scott Heaton.

A true independent, Bagbrown is releasing their first effort on their own accord.  It is available today for physical purchase at cdbaby.com/.  Substantive LPs are often tall orders for new bands yet this ten song, forty-five minute release has become only an endearing portion of their live repertoire.  Accordingly, the outfit intends on returning to the studio this autumn to record a follow up EP (inclusive of a B-Side from self-titled) before booking regional shows.  For a more introspective look at the band including bio, pics, and updates please visit the following web address:

Alien Alright The Exodus Is Here

July 8th, 2008

Alien Alright The Exodus Is Here

Musically inspired by the late 60’s-early 70’s, the album adopts the 7-song format and approach of classics like The Stooges’ Fun House, Neil Young’s , Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain, and Deep Purple’s Machine Head.

In line with that, it allows room for some instrumental exploration and long guitar solos, notably on the 9-minute closer, Record Store Blues. Similarly, there are some shorter songs, with perhaps more of a mainstream appeal, as in the two intended singles, Unsigned and Proud, and Make Some Noise.

The title too, is taken from that era. The Exodus Is Here is a line from Baba O’Reily by The Who, the opening track of their 1971 album, Who’s Next. Nonetheless, these links to older times are done in the wider context of the album, which largely deals with the changes in the way music is now being created, promoted and consumed.

The Exodus Is Here is Alien Alright’s third release so far, with each release being stylistically different from the next. His debut, Howard Good’s Radio Sessions (2004), was largely acoustic, whereas its follow-up, The First Impression EP (2005), used looped beats to combine straight forward Rock with Hip-Hop and Funk.

“I can remember the feeling of going to the record store”, sings Alien Alright in one of the concluding lines on the album. The future of record shops might be in doubt, but there can be some consolation, if thanks to the independence that the internet gives, more musicians make albums which are adventurous as well as accessible, and with something to say.

Tracy Johnson Waves Her Magic Wand

March 25th, 2008

San Diego, CA, March 25, 2008 — San Diego artist Tracy Johnson (Snowfire Records), an independent singer/songwriter who has had several songs placed in episodes of MTV’s The Real World Denver and Newport Harbor (formerly known as Laguna Beach) and has a track licensed for use as the music for the closing credits in the upcoming feature film Winter of Frozen Dreams (2008) starring Thora Birch (of American Beauty), released a new single today called “The Art of Dreaming”.

“The Art of Dreaming” was produced by David K Sale, most recently known for his work with Katharine Whalen of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. The song was released as a “digital only” download on CDBaby.com and will be available on several other digital sites in the next couple of months including; itunes, Rhapsody Music, Sony Connect and Verizon V-Cast.

“Artist Tracy Johnson gets a Thunderstorm of praise for her new single, “The Art of Dreaming.” A smash of slightly mystical cymbals and whispering drums. A little Lisa Loeb in the vocals. A “pretty, pretty, pretty” sound-and yes, you have got yourself a dream. You ask yourself how a little girl from Minnesota, who loved wild weather and the outdoors, could get the inside track on today’s most current sound? When the music is that good, why ask? Get Tracy Johnson now!”
– H Style Magazine

It’s been a whirlwind year for the Minnesota Native. Soon after moving to San Diego, Tracy came to the attention of famed manager Inga Vainshtein (Jewel Kilcher) and Producer/Songwriter David K Sale (Katharine Whalen). Tracy’s debut album, Dreams in Cold Weather, was nominated for “Best Pop Album” at the 2007 San Diego Music Awards. One of her singles, “The Good Life”, spent nine weeks on the Top 40 charts on one of the largest radio stations in Turkey. Two of the tracks started receiving airplay on XM Satellite Radio.

In March of 2008, Tracy signed a deal with Fabtone Records/Media Factory Distribution and will be releasing Dreams in Cold Weather in Japan.

Greetings From Lafayette Park

March 25th, 2008
Alan J. Lipman
Greetings From Lafayette Park
Pennsylvania Avenue
Dirty Little Secret
The Cost
Song From New Release CD “Greetings From Lafayette Park” by Doctor/Lawyer CNN/BBC Commentator Tops iTunes Popularity
“Pennsylvania Avenue” is the bold new ‘state-of-the-nation’ narrative from Alan J. Lipman, aka X-Patriate. 2008 has seen this song reach top popularity status on iTunes. It is taken from the remarkable new album “Greetings From Lafayette Park”, newly released on OneSuch Records. This record, with its echoes of Springsteen, Dylan and The Beatles, has been making waves all over the world – first in Italy and France, and now in Japan and the US too, word-of-mouth has drawn over a quarter of a million viewers to X-Patriate’s MySpace page. And with other album tracks “Dirty Little Secret” and “Dirty Life” also achieving top popularity on iTunes, it seems that Lipman has something to say that people want to hear.

Lipman writes all of the music and lyrics, plays all of the instruments, and sings every word on the record. He also has a unique background. He has been writing music since the age of 8, but he is also a doctor with a private practice in the heart of Georgetown, in Washington DC, has served as a professor at Georgetown University, is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, a published author (represented by the country’s leading non-fiction agency, as cited in the “New Yorker”, Dupree-Miller), and a commentator for CNN, the BBC, NBC News, the Washington Post, L.A. Times, and Agence France Presse, among other media. He has lectured throughout the world, served on White House initiated campaigns and as advisor to nations and the State Department, and, in his clinical work, has worked at the most elite institutions such as Yale University School of Medicine, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown, as well as with the most bereft souls on the streets of Washington. Lipman’s work has ranged from the most powerful politicians, journalists, attorneys, and other leading hearts and minds in Washington DC, to those struggling to keep heart and mind, body and soul together–as well the many minds and souls in between, who daily walk the streets of this and every city.  Politics, love, depth and darkness, hope, passion and betrayal– Lipman music and lyrics bring them all forth, directly from his unique and multiple perspectives at the heart of the nation.  He is certainly not your typical musician!

Yet through everything else, each year, Lipman has been writing lyrics and music, singing, playing all the instruments, and recording. He now records his music in a studio that he has built located just a few steps away from the Capitol and the White House - in the very heart of the nation. “Greetings From Lafayette Park” has now delivered this music from the heart of the nation into the world.

“Greetings” has been lauded far and wide for its musical diversity and lyrical depth. International publications such as “Whip art”-Italy’s National Art Publication based in Rome, and Nighttime Magazine are amongst the new devotees of this extraordinary album, with feature stories and in-depth interviews of Lipman. Even the cover shows the levels of thoughtfulness and invention Lipman has brought to the project. Combining the famous “Abbey Road” cover with an ironic nod to Springsteen’s “Greetings from Asbury Park”, and the apples and oranges presented to us by DC brilliantly captures the musical diversity, emotional depth and lyric complexity of the songs within.

Greetings From Lafayette Park
The epic “Pennsylvania Avenue” uses DC as Springsteen used Asbury Park, with the inner emotions, darkness, passions, power, and hope of the many different groups in DC used as a prism to reflect the power, passion, dreams,  and often undiscovered darkness of humanity. The powerful political message has since seen the track included in a very popular Obama IMix on iTunes.

The haunting “Dirty Little Secret”–also having reached top popularity on iTunes–evokes Dylan in its lyrical sharpness, while Lipman’s deep, warm, powerful vocal performance has been compared to Nick Cave.  The cool, knowing “Dirty Life” with a driving backbeat, reminds the listener of Lennon’s irony and his direct biting insight. Lipman also shows full out orchestral power in the beautiful ballads “The Cost” and “I’d Rather Close My Eyes” , and the multiple string sections and extraordinary close of “A Physical Thing” is like a modern take on “All You Need is Love,” rising to a powerful crescendo that includes carillon, wedding bells, stereo sweeping subway chimes, telephone–and barking dogs!

These 16 songs represent extraordinary musical artistry, with lyrics of rare insight, intellect, and depth, and with layers of meaning that invite – even demand – multiple listens.

With almost no prior publicity, every song on the album has already reached top popularity on iTunes in France and Italy. It has received over a quarter of a million views on MySpace, where countless listeners have left unsolicited rave reviews about Lipman’s deep voice and powerful and moving songs. European press have hailed Lipman as a new star and his music has received airplay across the continent. The album has since been acquired for sale by Rhapsody, Amazon, Emusic, Target, as well as all other iTunes International Sites.

“Greetings” is a powerful work by an artist with a unique ability to look into the hearts and minds of those at the center of the nation. He has brought his experiences to the music as a reflection of the diverse desires, passions, hopes, darkness and dreams of this world.

With awakening and exposing the dysfunction of the ego in mind, Miss Kristin sings and rocks her way through startling conversion. Composing with a deliberate desire to be healed herself, to be transformed, awakened Miss Kristin wades through the muck and mire of her realizing ego to finally reach the clear water of restoration, freedom and life.

“The Runner was not an easy new music collection to record and create” states, Miss Kristin, who often times had difficulty getting up off the floor to sing a part and complete the project. “It was all I could do to write the words let alone sing them”. But Kristin prevailed on purpose for what she calls, “the greater cause”. The Runner is a journey in facing ourselves head on. We are all runners in one way or another, and Miss Kristin has written a universal new music collection with the intention others can relate to and find comfort in the fact they are not alone, but a part of something larger and greater then themselves.

With songs like “The Lost Years”, “Torch Song” “The Runner” and “Many Ways To Die”, this new music release, Kristin’s seventh record now on the Big Fuss label, should not be missed. Miss Kristin joins forces with Mr. Tom Landry again on guitars and creates a new sound -

12 Additional Cities to Show Historic Church-State Simulcast Event

March 18th, 2008

Actors, musicians and comedians will join church-state community members across the country on Wednesday evening, March 26, 2008 to put church-state separation on the national agenda during the 2008 election season.

Peter Coyote, celebrated Hollywood actor and filmmaker, will emcee the program, which will include such special guests as The Bacon Brothers (featuring actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael), actors Michael J. Fox; Jack Klugman; James Whitmore; Wendie Malick; Dan Lauria; and
Catherine Dent; comedian and Air America host Marc Maron; singer/songwriter Catie Curtis and satirist Roy Zimmerman.

idwestern theater owner Bob Goodrich has announced he will provide 12 additional theaters to air the First Freedom First program “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Separation of Church and State…But Were Afraid to Ask” March 26.

Goodrich owns the Goodrich Quality Theater chain with locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. (Go to First Freedom First to check for a new listing near you!)

“I believe it’s important that as many as Americans as possible see this program and understand how some of our core freedoms may be at risk,” Goodrich said. “I’m proud my theaters will be involved in this effort.”

In movie theatres in 37 cities across the nation (full list of theaters), interested citizens will gather to learn about the threats to church-state separation and to demand that candidates for elected office answer questions about key issues dealing with individual freedom. Ten questions to ask candidates that have a direct impact on Americans’ lives will be featured.

The high-definition program is being hosted by First Freedom First, a joint project of Americans United for Separation of Church and State and The Interfaith Alliance Foundation.

Americans who have fought for individual freedom will tell their stories during the 90 minute simulcast event. Bryan and Christy Rehm (who fought creationism in Dover, Pa. science classes), Matthew LaClair (a New Jersey high schooler who exposed religious indoctrination at his school), Roberta Stewart (an Afghanistan War widow who fought for equal rights for Wiccan veterans), Dr. Susan Wicklund (who wears a bullet-proof vest to provide reproductive services in underserved areas), the Rev. Madison Shockley (pastor and reproductive rights advocate), David and Ryan Altoon (who oppose fundamentalist proselytism at U.S. military academies), Melinda “Lindy” Maddox (who successfully sued Alabama “Commandments” Judge Roy Moore), and Susan Jacoby (author of The Age of American Unreason).

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United executive director, and the Rev. Welton Gaddy, president of The Interfaith Alliance Foundation, will also participate in the simulcast.

Said Lynn, “This is a unique event that brings together celebrity commitment, civic engagement and the latest technology. Presidential candidates have been asked what their favorite Bible verse is and what sins they have committed. I want to know where they stand on key issues of individual freedom. This simulcast will tell us how to find out that information — and give us an entertaining evening to boot.”

Said Gaddy, “We are thrilled that so many American icons we have welcomed into our living rooms over the years have graciously agreed to lend their star-power to focus attention on religious liberty and some of its heroes. This gathering should prove to be a lively and much-deserved celebration of the diversity of belief systems in this country and some of the citizens who have boldly taken public stands to protect the boundaries between religion and government.”

The March 26 simulcast is being produced by Progressive Media Agency, a Portland, OR, based firm led by Adam Klugman and Enrique Arias.
